The name UGM Residence began to be used informally in 2008 to refer to the dormitory management body. At that time, the management of the dormitories was handed over by the Directorate of Student Affairs to the Master of Management Study Program (MM Study Program) of the Faculty of Economics and Business. This handover to the MM Study Program was based on the Program’s success in developing Wisma MM as high-quality student housing that supports the Tri Dharma of Higher Education.
This transfer was further ratified by the issuance of the Universitas Gadjah Mada Rector’s Decree Number 250/P/SK/HT/2008 concerning the Handover of Student Dormitory Management in the Universitas Gadjah Mada Environment to the Faculty of Economics and Business, Universitas Gadjah Mada. After a series of management improvement processes, the MM Study Program returned the dormitory management to the Directorate of Student Affairs on May 7, 2009.
The name UGM Residence officially appeared in the Universitas Gadjah Mada Rector’s Regulation Number 1/P/SK/HT/2015 concerning the Position, Function, and Organizational Duties within Universitas Gadjah Mada. In this regulation, UGM Residence became one of the supporting elements under the coordination of the Vice Rector for Cooperation and Alumni, with the task of managing the dormitories, Grha Sabha Pramana (GSP), and Taman Kearifan (subsequently referred to as Wisdom Park).
The Rector’s Regulation Number 10 of 2023 concerning the Organization and Work Procedure of Universitas Gadjah Mada re-stipulated that in performing its duties, UGM Residence carries out the function of providing student dormitory housing services at UGM and its supporting facilities, including the Grha Sabha Pramana Building and Wisdom Park, to support the Tri Dharma activities. Furthermore, in 2024, UGM Residence received the assignment to manage the Kinanti 4 apartment building for lecturers and educational staff.
With the assignments mentioned above, UGM Residence has developed into a university housing provider that offers a learning environment and accommodation with supporting facilities such as sports facilities, parks, drinking water logistics, and both indoor and outdoor meeting rooms. In addition, UGM Residence also carries out the task of supporting the Tri Dharma by building an ecosystem capable of helping UGM students become superior and highly-charactered human resources (HR).
